Why Being Good at What You Do Isn't Enough to Get Referred

I've met plenty of business owners who are well connected. They attend networking events, build relationships, schedule one-to-one conversations, and genuinely make an effort to stay visible.

People know them. People like them. People may even think very highly of their work.

But ask those same connections a simple question:

“Who should I refer to this person?”

Sometimes the answer isn't nearly as clear as the business owner thinks it is.

That's something worth paying attention to.

Your Network May Know You Without Knowing How to Refer You

We spend a lot of time talking about getting more referrals. And when referrals aren't coming, the natural response is often to do more networking.

Join another group. Attend another event. Meet more people. Follow up more often.

But before adding more people to your network, take a closer look at the people who already know you.

Could they explain what you do without your help?

More importantly, would they recognize the right opportunity for you when they hear it?

Those are two very different things.

I've found that business owners sometimes assume that because we've explained our business, other people know how to refer us. That's a big assumption.

We live inside our businesses every day. We know our services, our terminology, our clients, and all the different ways we can help.

Our referral partners don't.

And we shouldn't expect them to.

Stop Asking People to Remember Everything You Do

Here's something I tell business owners: your network does not need to remember your entire list of services.

Give people something specific to listen for.

Maybe it's a problem your ideal client keeps mentioning.

Maybe it's a frustration.

Maybe it's a business transition.

Maybe it's a question that comes up repeatedly.

That is what I call a referral trigger.

It's the moment in a conversation when someone hears something and thinks:

“You need to talk to Gayle.”

Or Tracy. Or Michael. Or _______ your name.

That's what we want.

You don't want someone struggling to remember the seven services listed on your website. You want your name connected to a recognizable need.

Can Other People Explain Your Value?

Here's an exercise I think every business owner should try.

Ask a few people who know your business:

“If you were introducing me to someone who needed my help, what would you say I do?”

Then listen.

Don't correct them. Don't fill in the blanks. Don't give them your elevator pitch first.

Just listen.

Their answers will tell you quite a bit about how clearly your business is positioned in the minds of other people.

If everyone gives you a completely different answer, that's useful information.

If they can describe your profession but can't identify who needs you, that's useful too.

And if their answer sounds nothing like the way you want your business positioned, now you know there is work to do.

Referrals Carry Someone Else's Reputation

There's another side of referrals that business owners sometimes overlook.

When I refer someone, I'm putting my name behind that recommendation.

Most people who take their relationships seriously understand this.

I don't want to introduce someone simply because I know a person who offers that service. I want to have some confidence that the connection makes sense.

Your referral partners are likely thinking the same way.

The clearer you make your value, your ideal client, and the situations you are best equipped to handle, the easier it becomes for someone to make that introduction with confidence.

Your Existing Network May Be an Underused Business Asset

This is where referral readiness connects directly to monetization.

When business owners think about creating more revenue, the first thought is often, “What else can I sell?”

A new service.

A new product.

A new program.

But sometimes there is revenue potential sitting inside relationships you've already spent years developing.

Former clients. Current clients. Colleagues. Vendors. Community connections. Strategic partners. People you've met through networking.

The question is whether those people know what to listen for on your behalf.

You may already have people willing to open doors for you. Make sure you've given them enough clarity to know which doors make sense.

Before You Ask for More Referrals, Ask a Better Question

Instead of starting with:

“How can I get more referrals?”

Try:

“Have I made it easy for someone to refer me?”

I think that's the more useful question.

And be willing to hear the answer.

If your message is difficult to repeat, tighten it.

If your ideal client is difficult to identify, clarify it.

If people don't know what situation should make them think of you, give them something specific to listen for.

You don't need your network to become your sales team.

You simply want the right people to recognize the right opportunity and know when it makes sense to put your name into the conversation.
